RCIA for Children

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is for two groups of children:

  • Those children who have reached the age of reason but have not been baptized.
  • Those children who have reached the age of reason but have been baptized in another Faith and not catechized as a Catholic (e.g. a child who was baptized in a Lutheran church, catechized as a Lutheran & now seeks to become Catholic).

RCIA is a process that culminates in the child's entrance into the Catholic Church on Easter Vigil, receiving the Sacraments of Baptism (if not already baptized), Confirmation, and Eucharist. This process is unlike regular Wednesday classes. "The Christian initiation of these children requires both a conversion that is personal and somewhat developed, in proportion to their age, and the assistance of the education they need." (R.C.I.A., #253) The initiation of these children has several steps and liturgical rites before the Easter Vigil, unlike Wednesday nights.
