St. Peter's Catholic Church of Stanton had its beginning in 1892 when Fr. Joseph Roesing held services at the home of Joseph Hakl. Fr. James Aherne was assistant at that time, and later was appointed pastor of the Stanton and Wisner parishes.

In March, 1893, Joe Karmann, John LammIi, Otto Shaby, Sigmund Armbruster, and William Ryan were instrumental in securing lots north of the Stanton city park, where a church and parsonage were built. The dedication service was filled to capacity. There was preaching in German, Bohemian, and English.

From 1908 to 1915, Stanton was attended by assistant pastors of Sacred Heart of Norfolk. In 1914, the Stanton congregation petitioned the Bishop of the Omaha Diocese to appoint a resident priest to serve 75 families. Upon the approval of the petition, Fr. A Jarzemski served as the first resident priest.

In the late 40's the church building was repaired and redecorated. New windows, doors and furnace were installed. An electric organ was purchased in 1950.

The little frame church became inadequate after serving the parish for 73 years. In 1965 the rectory was moved further back on the lot to make room for a new church building. In 1966 plans were made for a larger brick structure. The first spade of dirt was turned on July 27, 1967. On an extremely cold, snowy day, on January 11, 1968, the cornerstone was laid. On August 10, 1968, the first nuptial vows in the completed church were exchanged by Lois Thalken and John B. Eberly. The first burial was for Carl Rudersdorf; the first baptism, for Margaret Jensen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rueben Jensen, Jr. Pastor, Father Kenneth Carl presided over the formal dedications, held in May 1970.

There were many priests that served over the years. When Fr. Carl was reassigned in 1975, Fr. Gill served as Pastor from 1975-1978. Fr. John Rizzo was pastor of St. Peter's Church from 1978-1986. Fr. Timothy Lange served as Pastor from 1986-2008. During Fr. Tim's tenure at St. Peter's a new rectory was built in 2005. Shortly after the rectory was built a new spacious parish hall with classrooms was completed under Fr. Tim's guidance. The hall serves as a gathering point for members of the Parish and can be rented by non-parishioners.

Fr. Jerry Connealy served as Pastor from 2008-2019. On May 5, 2012, Fr. Jerry celebrated his 25th Anniversary to the Priesthood. On the same day, Deacon Al Wolverton was Ordained to the Diaconate. In 2017 Fr. Jerry celebrated his 30th Anniversary to the Priesthood while serving as Pastor to St. Peter's.

In 2019 Fr. Patrick McLaughlin became Pastor and introduced a new "Family of Parishes" approved by Archbishop George Lucas. Because of the shortage of priests, the parishes joined together to create "Heart of Jesus Catholic Parishes". This included Sacred Heart in Norfolk, St. Peter's in Stanton and St. Leonard in Madison. Later, St. Patrick in Battle Creek and St. Joseph in Pierce joined our "Family of Parishes".

Through the years St Peter's saw a growing and thriving parish. The Altar Society has always been active, providing refreshments at socials, and serving funeral dinners. The Parish Family organized by the Altar Society sponsors a Spring Dinner every year with good food and fellowship for everyone in the community.

Over the years the Knights of Columbus have been active with hamburger feeds for religious ed and leading the rosary before mass. They do fundraisers to gather funds for their scholarships.

St. Peter's has been fortunate to have a beautiful choir over the years. In 2025, Marrianne Psota celebrated 75 yrs of serving St. Peter's with her talents of playing the piano and organ during Mass. She has been instrumental in keeping music alive in our Parish. Marrianne and Mary Campbell are both currently assisting and directing the Choir for Mass throughout the year.

We thank all those at St. Peter's that continue to make our Parish welcoming to our friends and families, including those in our family of Parishes, and those who are visitors to our Church. Special thanks to the volunteers who offer up their time and talents.
